Immigration, Crime, and Public Safety: Balancing Enforcement and Policy Reform

In recent years, the number of undocumented immigrants in the United States has risen again, with Pew Research Center (2024) estimating that in 2022 there were roughly 11 million living in the country—an increase of about half a million from the previous year, reversing more than a decade of decline. At the same time, the Biden administration adopted a more lenient approach to border enforcement and admitted approximately 500,000 people through programs such as CHNV and U4U (Pasell). This increase has fueled public concerns about safety, as political rhetoric often links undocumented immigrants with crime and threats to national security. However, academic studies demonstrate that the equation of “undocumented immigrant equals criminal” is not supported by evidence.
